Everything is done from your computer — just a browser and your home WiFi is all you need.
Plug Due Light into a USB-C wall charger — the same kind used to charge most devices. Any charger works. It does not need to be plugged into a computer.
The lights will blink a few times as it starts up. After about 10 seconds all three LEDs will pulse slowly — that means it's ready to set up.
Due Light reads assignments using a Canvas access key — a code that gives it read-only access to the Canvas account. It cannot submit work, change grades, or post anything.
Have your student log into Canvas in a web browser, then:
Also note your school's Canvas address — it looks like yourschool.instructure.com and is visible in the browser address bar when logged into Canvas.
Due Light creates its own temporary WiFi network during setup. On your computer, open WiFi settings and connect to the network named:
DueLight-A3F2B1)On most computers a setup page will pop up automatically as soon as you connect — if it does, skip straight to Step 4.
If nothing pops up, open your browser and go to 192.168.4.1 manually.
Your computer may warn you that this network has no internet — that's expected. Stay connected anyway.
The setup page will scan for nearby WiFi networks automatically. Select your home network from the list and enter the password.
Use the Test WiFi connection button to confirm it works before moving on.
Paste the access key you copied in Step 2 into the Canvas token field. Enter your school's Canvas address (yourschool.instructure.com) in the field below it.
Use the Test Canvas token button to confirm it connects successfully before saving.
Select the timezone you're in so Due Light knows when assignments are actually due.
You can also set how far ahead the light should warn:
The defaults work well for most students. You can always change them later from the settings page.
Click Save & Continue. Due Light will connect to your home WiFi and check Canvas for the first time. This takes about 30 seconds.
Once it's back on your home WiFi, the settings page is available at:
Bookmark this address. You'll need it to update your Canvas token when it expires or to change any settings. It only works when your computer is connected to the same WiFi as Due Light.
The light will show the current assignment status once connected. You can now place it anywhere with a wall outlet and WiFi signal.
Due Light will check Canvas automatically every 10 minutes and update the light on its own. No app, no account, nothing to log into.
It may still be connecting for the first time. Give it a minute or two after setup. If it stays stuck, the Canvas token or school address may have been entered incorrectly — connect to your home WiFi and go to due-light.local in your browser to check the settings.
If Due Light has been set up before, it won't create the hotspot again — it will connect to your home WiFi instead. To reset it and start fresh, press the small button in the bottom left corner 5 times, pausing about 1 second between each press. All three LEDs will flash together to confirm the reset, then the device will restart in setup mode and create the DueLight-XXXXXX network again.
Alternatively, if you can reach the settings page at due-light.local, use the Factory Reset button at the bottom.
If you've never set it up and still can't see the network, try unplugging and replugging the device and waiting 15 seconds.
Due Light will warn you before a token expires. To update it, make sure your computer is on the same WiFi as Due Light, then go to due-light.local in your browser. Generate a new token in Canvas following Step 2 above, paste it in, and save. Remember — token generation requires a computer browser, not the Canvas mobile app.
Press the small button in the bottom left corner 5 times, pausing about 1 second between each press. All three LEDs will flash to confirm the reset. Due Light will restart in setup mode — follow the setup steps from the beginning. Note: a factory reset wipes everything, including your WiFi credentials and Canvas token, so have your Canvas token ready before starting (see Step 2).
Yes — if your student's school uses Canvas (by Instructure), Due Light will work. Most K–12 schools and many colleges in the US use Canvas. If you're not sure, check whether your student logs into a website ending in .instructure.com to see their assignments.
The Canvas access key is read-only. Due Light can only see assignment names and due dates — it cannot submit work, send messages, change grades, or access anything else. The key is stored on the device itself and is never sent to our servers.
It just needs to be within range of your home WiFi — the same range as any other device on your network. Most homes have no issues anywhere inside. If you have a large home, a spot closer to a router or WiFi extender works best.
